cold

As freezing temperatures and potential snowfall approach, the City of Clarkston encourages all residents to take precautionary measures to ensure safety and preparedness. Winter weather can disrupt daily routines, present safety hazards, and strain resources. By taking proactive steps, you can minimize risks and protect your family, home, and community.

Stay Informed

The foundation of preparedness is staying informed about changing weather conditions and city updates.

  • Weather Updates: Stay updated through the National Weather Service for the latest forecasts, warnings, and advisories specific to our area.
  • City Notifications: Check the City of Clarkston website and social media channels regularly for local updates, closures, and advisories.

Household Preparedness

Protect Your Home

  • Pipes and Plumbing:
    • Allow faucets to drip during freezing temperatures to prevent frozen pipes.
    • Open cabinets under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
    • Insulate exposed pipes with foam or towels, especially in unheated areas such as garages and crawl spaces.
  • Heating Safety:
    • Ensure all heating devices, including space heaters, are in good working condition and placed on stable, non-flammable surfaces.
    • Never leave heating devices unattended or use stoves and ovens as heat sources.
  • Energy Conservation:
    • Lower your thermostat when away from home to prevent energy waste.
    • Seal gaps around windows and doors to maintain indoor warmth.

Emergency Supplies

  • Prepare a household emergency kit with the following:
    • Non-perishable food and bottled water for at least three days.
    • Prescription medications and medical supplies.
    • Flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
    • Warm clothing, blankets, and a first aid kit.

Pet Safety

Pets are vulnerable to cold weather and should be cared for accordingly:

  • Shelter: Bring pets indoors during freezing temperatures. If outdoor shelter is unavoidable, ensure it is insulated, dry, and windproof, with ample bedding.
  • Water: Frequently check and refresh water bowls to ensure water remains unfrozen. Heated bowls are recommended if available.
  • Outdoor Time: Limit exposure to the cold and monitor for signs of frostbite or hypothermia, such as shivering or lethargy.

Travel Preparedness

Avoid Travel

Limit travel during hazardous weather conditions unless absolutely necessary.

If You Must Travel

  • Equip your vehicle with:
    • An ice scraper, blankets, water, and a fully charged mobile phone.
    • A small supply of non-perishable snacks and a flashlight with spare batteries.
  • Drive slowly and increase following distances to reduce the risk of accidents on icy roads.

Power Outages and Utilities

Power outages are common during winter storms. Be prepared to respond effectively:

  • Report outages to Georgia Power:
  • Turn off major appliances during an outage to prevent power surges when electricity is restored.
  • Use portable generators safely, keeping them outdoors and away from windows to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
